We’re in the homestretch and heading down to the wire on Ottawa’s bid to host the 2021 Canada Summer Games!   We believe our city has what it takes to pull away from our competitors and bring Canada’s Games to Canada’s Capital.  The prize? Welcoming 4600 young, up-and-coming athletes to our city and witnessing their dedication, skills and triumphs during two weeks of intensive competition in mid-summer 2021.  It will be an exciting and inspiring event for athletes and spectators alike.  And it will be a giant leap forward for our city as a host destination for major sporting events!

We want the games, and we need your support to bring them home!

Canada’s Games in Canada’s Capital

The Canada Games is a nation-building event, and Ottawa’s 2021 bid is focused on showcasing the Games on a national stage. As the nation’s capital, Ottawa is the city where Canadians gather to celebrate their shared history and heritage, to explore national landmarks, museums and historic sites, to honour the Indigenous peoples who came before, and to pay homage to those who built our country into what it is today.  In 2021, the capital will celebrate young athletes, their sports, and Canadian culture in a national setting befitting this important event.  The venues and athlete accommodations will be of the highest standard, enabling athletes to excel in the national spotlight. Athletes, along with their families and friends, will have the opportunity to experience their country as nowhere else.

About The Games: A Nation-Building Event

The Canada Games are the largest multi-sport event in the country for young athletes, and a premium nation-building event that enriches Canadian culture and creates lasting legacies. This two-week event takes place every two years, alternating summer and winter. The Canada Summer Games attract athletes from every province and territory in the country to compete in 20 different individual and team sports. The event is a key step in developing the next generation of elite Canadian athletes: at the Rio 2016 Olympics, 64 per cent of Team Canada medalists were Canada Games alumni. Eugenie Bouchard, Andre De Grasse and Steve Nash are all Canada Summer Games alumni. The Games also leave an important lasting legacy in the host community in the form of new and upgraded athletic facilities that benefit athletes and the general public.  It likewise helps the host community develop significant hosting and volunteer capacity, and builds a sense of community pride and accomplishment.

The Ottawa Bid for the 2021 Canada Summer Games

An executive committee, co-chaired by Ottawa Senators President, Cyril Leeder, and four-time Olympian, Sue Holloway, with representatives from the local business community, Ottawa Tourism, the City of Ottawa and local sport organizations has been established to oversee the bid process. Simple and compact, Ottawa’s bid for the 2021 Canada Summer Games offers an outstanding Athletes’ Village concept (at Carleton University) and venue clusters that would offer an inspiring Games experience for athletes and spectators alike.

The bid leverages more than 20 existing sport and non-sport venues, all within less than a 30-minute drive of the Athletes’ Village. These include City of Ottawa facilities and other venues operated by Carleton University, uOttawa, Ottawa Sport and Entertainment Group, Camp Fortune, Nepean Sailing Club and the Ottawa Tennis and Lawn Bowling Club.
